Doha, Qatar — The Uganda U17 national football team—popularly known as the Uganda Cubs—has made history after qualifying for the Round of 16 at the ongoing FIFA U17 World Cup, marking the country’s first-ever appearance in the knockout stages of a global football tournament.

The breakthrough came after a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Senegal in the Round of 32 in Qatar, a result that sparked national celebrations and a wave of congratulatory messages from leaders, fans, and football bodies.

The CECAFA champions scored through Abubakar Walusimbi after 14 minutes as they eliminated Senegal’s Young Lions of Teranga.

It was all celebration after the final whistle, after the Ugandan team had ejected the African U-17 champions. In the last Group K match against 2001 champions France, Uganda carried the day 1-0.

“First, I am very happy that we beat a tough side like Senegal. But I must credit our goalkeeper, who kept us in the game because he was very outstanding. The other players also kept to the instructions,” Uganda’s head Coach Brian Ssenyondo told Cecafa after the match.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) highlighted Uganda’s achievement in a celebratory post, noting: “Round of 16 bound! Uganda & Burkina Faso are through to the next stage at the #U17WC!”

First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni, was among the first to applaud the young team’s historic performance.

In a message shared on X, she wrote: “Congratulations to our U17 Cubs for making history as the first Ugandan team to reach the knockout stages of a FIFA World Cup! This milestone shows what dedication, teamwork, and God’s grace can achieve. As the tournament continues, keep your focus and spirit strong. The Country is behind you, cheering you on, and I pray God takes you even further towards winning the tournament.”

The Uganda Football Federation (FUFA) posted videos of jubilant scenes as the Cubs returned to their team hotel to a standing ovation from supporters, officials, and hotel staff.

In a follow-up statement, FUFA acknowledged the broad national support behind the young stars: “Congratulatory messages to the Uganda Cubs upon qualifying for the Round of 16 from the First Lady and Minister of Education Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anitah Annet Among, the Minister of State for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, and FUFA President Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim.”

With the landmark victory, Uganda joins fellow African sides such as Mali and Morocco—also confirmed by CAF—to advance to the knockout rounds, signalling a strong continental showing at this year’s tournament.

As the Cubs prepare for their next challenge, the nation’s hopes remain high that the spirited youngsters will push even further into uncharted territory and continue rewriting Uganda’s football history.
