Uganda Coffee has won gold at the 10th International Competition for “Originally Roasted Coffees” in Paris, France.
The 2024 competition was hosted by the Agency for the Valorisation of Agricultural Products (AVPA) to enable producers to improve consumer perception of exceptional coffees cultivated and roasted properly by the producers.
AVPA offers an opportunity to producers (individual or organized in associations or cooperatives) who take responsibility for their roasting and roasters located in the countries of production and guarantee the traceability of their coffees, to participate in the contest “Coffees roasted at origin”.
Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) supported 12 coffee roasters to participate in the AVPA competition, bringing home a total of 15 awards.
“The team won 3 Golds, 1 Silver, 3 Bronze, and 8 Gourmet Medals,” posted UCDA on its X platform on November 5, 2024.
In 2023, Ugandan Coffee brands were recognized among the world’s best coffees at the 9th International Contest of “Coffees Roasted at Origin” 2023 competition held in Paris, France.
According to UCDA’s Monthly Report-September 2024, exports in September 2024, amounted to 532,212 60-kilo bags, worth US$ 144.7m. This comprised 504,576 bags of Robusta valued at US$ 137.19m and 27,636 bags of Arabica at US$ 7.51m.
Uganda’s coffee exports for 12 months (Coffee year 2023/2024) totaled 6.35m bags worth US$ 1.4b compared to 6.14m bags worth US$ 940.1m in the previous year (Coffee year 2022/2023). This represents an increase of 3.42% and 48.97% in quantity and value, respectively.
“76% of the total volume was exported by 10 exporters, out of 65 companies that performed during the month compared to 75% in August 2024. Sustainable Arabica and Sustainable Robusta fetched the highest price at US $ 5.69 per kilo,” reads the report in part.
