Mbale, Uganda – Uganda and Kenya have further strengthened their defence collaboration to address shared security challenges. The Joint Defence Committee (JDC 5) convened at Mbale Resort Hotel from 13-15 January 2025, building upon the success of the previous meeting held in Nairobi in May 2024.
The meeting, chaired by Major General Don Nabasa, head of Uganda’s Joint Staff Policy and Strategy, emphasised the importance of strengthening joint military efforts to enhance bilateral relations and address regional security concerns.
“This meeting underscores the strong and growing partnership between our two nations,” stated Maj Gen Nabasa. “The decisions made here will guide our strategic priorities as we work together to enhance security and stability.”
He expressed gratitude for Kenya’s commitment to implementing agreements, particularly in areas such as intelligence sharing and combating shared threats like livestock rustling and related crimes in the Turkana and West Pokot regions.
Brig Samuel Kimani, Chief of Strategic Plans and Policy at Kenya Defence Headquarters, highlighted the significance of military cooperation under the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA), which addresses crucial issues such as cybercrime and terrorism.
“We are committed to working together effectively to respond to emerging threats,” Brig Kimani remarked. He acknowledged the leadership of Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in fostering military collaboration, including joint training, exchange programs, and peacekeeping efforts within the region.
The discussions covered a wide range of topics, including bilateral relations, disarmament operations, countering violent extremism, joint operations, training, and maritime security on Lake Victoria. The outcomes of this meeting are expected to significantly enhance security and promote long-term stability in both countries.
The Kenyan delegation included Brigadier Samuel Kimani, Colonel Patrick Nkaduda, Colonel Orwa Odhiambo, Lieutenant Colonel Elim Stephen Lobokot, Major Kenneth Kanyi Mwangi, and Major Anderson Olero Okumu.
Uganda’s team was led by Major General Don Nabasa, Brigadier Wilberforce Sserunkuma, Brigadier Michael Nyarwa, Lieutenant Colonel Fred Wemba, Lieutenant Colonel Jean Rukira, and Major Gideon Makanzu.
