Trade Ministry PS Geraldine Ssali Arrested over Shs3.4bn Cooperatives Money

State House Anti-corruption Unit has arrested the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Trade, Industries and Cooperatives, Geraldine Ssali Busuulwa.

Ssali was arrested on Thursday afternoon in liaison with CID on Charges of Conspiracy to Defraud and Causing Financial Loss.

She is expected to take plea tomorrow, Friday.

The PS joins MPs; Michael Mawanda Maranga, Mudiimi Wamakuyu, Paul Akamba, Lawyer Julius Kirya Taitankonko and Leonard Kavundira a Ministry of Trade official who were earlier charged for the diversion of over UGX3.4B meant for war loss compensation by the government of Uganda to Buyaka Growers Cooperative Society.

Hon. Mawanda of Igara East Constituency in Bushenyi District, Hon. Wamakuyu of Elgon County in Bulambuli District, Hon. Akamba of Busiki County in Namutumba District and lawyer Kirya of Kirya Company Advocates and others still at large, appeared before the Anti-Corruption Court last month where they were charged with Diversion of Funds and Conspiracy to Defraud.

According to court records, the group conspired and diverted over UGX3.4B meant for war loss compensation to Buyaka Growers Cooperative Society for their personal use.

They were subsequently remanded to prison.
