Thomas Tayebwa Elected Deputy Speaker of 11th Parliament

Ruhinda North MP Thomas Tayebwa has been elected the new Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

Tayebwa garnered 379 votes against his challenger Moses Okot Bitek’s 82 votes to emerge the winner. The election, was held at Kololo Independence Grounds.

Tayebwa was nominated for the position by Tororo District Woman MP, Sarah Opendi and seconded by Women’s representative for Kitgum District, Lillian Aber, while his competitor Okot Bitek, was nominated by Opposition Chief Whip, John Baptist Nambeshe, and seconded by Aruu North MP, Santa Okot.

He replaces Bukedea district Woman MP, Anita Among who was elected Speaker after winning JEEMA President Asuman Basalirwa. Among garnered 401 votes against Basalirwa’s 66.

With the conclusion of the election of the speaker and deputy speaker, Parliament is expected to come up with the burial programme for Oulanyah who died on Sunday, in Seattle USA.
