KAMPALA – Uganda has officially sent off its delegation to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, with Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja flagging off the national team ahead of the global sporting event.

Team Uganda will be represented by 58 athletes competing in nine events at the Games scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2, 2026.

The Ugandan contingent will participate in disciplines including athletics, boxing, weightlifting, track cycling, 3×3 basketball, among others.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, Prime Minister Nabbanja wished the athletes success as they prepare to compete against some of the best sporting talent from across the Commonwealth.

“Team Uganda is off to Glasgow,” Nabbanja said as she handed over the national flag to the delegation.

The Glasgow Games will bring together athletes from Commonwealth nations and territories in a competition featuring 10 sports across different venues in the Scottish city.

Uganda enters the competition with a rich Commonwealth Games history, having won 58 medals since making its debut at the 1954 Vancouver Games.

The delegation includes athletes expected to carry Uganda’s hopes in athletics, a discipline where the country has traditionally enjoyed success through its long-distance runners, as well as emerging competitors in other sports.

The British High Commission in Uganda previously highlighted that Uganda would send more than 50 athletes to Glasgow, including competitors in athletics, para sports, boxing and other disciplines.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will mark Glasgow’s second time hosting the event after the city staged the Games in 2014. The organisers have adopted a streamlined format, using existing infrastructure across four main venues.

The competition will officially run from July 23 to August 2, with athletes competing in sports including athletics, boxing, cycling, swimming, gymnastics, judo, netball, weightlifting and 3×3 basketball.

Uganda’s team will now depart for Scotland with hopes of adding to the country’s medal tally and showcasing the nation’s sporting talent on the international stage.
