The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga has instructed the Clerk to Parliament, Jane Kibirige to declare Sheema North constituency vacant.
This follows the resignation of area MP, Dr Elioda Tumwesigye who was recently elected the MP for the newly created municipality of Sheema. Elioda had been the MP for Sheema North.
On Thursday afternoon, Kadaga confirmed Elioda Tumwesigye’s resignation immediately after he had taken Parliamentary oath as the Sheema municipality Member of Parliament.
“This morning I received a letter of resignation from Honorable Elioda Tumwesigye. I therefore direct the Clerk to declare the seat vacant so that a by-election can be held,’ Kadaga said.
Dr Elioda who doubles as the Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, trounced six candidates including FDCs, Ms Virginia Plan Mugyenyi, Mr Benjamin Ruyombya, Mr Ambrose Mwesigye all Independents.
Others were Mr Jonas Tumwiine, Mr Meshach Katusiime and Mr Raymond Kamugisha, also Independents.
By implication, declaring the seat vacant demands that another election is organized in Sheema North, which places an additional cost to Ugandans.
