The Federal Republic of Somalia has been admitted as the 8th Member of the East African Community (EAC) in accordance with Article 3 of the Treaty for the Establishment of the EAC.
This was during the 23rd Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State that took place in Arusha, Tanzania on Friday.
“The Somali people are honoured to be part of the EAC! This is a beacon of hope for us,” said H.E Hassan S Mohamud, the President of Somalia.

He added: “Hope for a future of opportunities and prosperity for Somalia, through regional integration!”
President Museveni congratulated President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia upon joining the EAC as its eighth member.
“Welcome to our East African Community! Only work here!” said President Suluhu Samia of the United Republic of Tanzania.
The summit was also attended by the President of Tanzania, H.E Samia Suluhu, the President of Kenya, H.E William Ruto, the President of Somalia, H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the Prime Minister of Rwanda, Dr. Edouard Ngirente, the Vice Prime Minister of DRC and Minister in charge of Defence, Mr. Jean-Pierre Bemba, EAC Secretary General, Hon. Dr. Peter Mathuki, among others.
