The highly anticipated Second Convention of Ugandans in Southern Africa (COUSA) has started in Pretoria, South Africa. Under the empowering theme: “Celebrating Ugandan Excellence and Development Solutions.” This significant event aims to unite Ugandans in the Southern African region and foster discussions focused on mobilizing Ugandan diaspora contribution to national development.
H.E President Yoweri Museveni is expected to deliver a keynote address as the Chief Guest or delegate a senior official from Kampala, underscoring the government’s commitment to engaging its diaspora. The government’s support highlights the Ugandan diaspora’s crucial role in promoting the nation’s economic advancement, particularly through remittances and investments. The event will strengthen connections with Ugandans living in all the six countries covered by the Uganda High Commission in Pretoria, including Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, and Lesotho, showcasing the warm bilateral relations shared between Uganda and these nations.
The Confederation of Ugandans in Southern Africa (COUSA) plays an essential role in fostering connections among Ugandans in the region. Its primary objectives include promoting trade, investment, tourism, and increasing remittances to Uganda. COUSA aims to ensure that Ugandans in the diaspora are included in national development discussions that their unique needs are addressed through effective communication with the Ugandan government, and that their skills and talents are constructively embraced across sectors of our national development.
During her recent official visit to South Africa to attend the inauguration of President Cyril Ramaphosa, the Vice President, H.E Jessica Alupo, highlighted the importance of the diaspora’s contributions, emphasizing the government’s intention to create an environment conducive to investment from Ugandans abroad. She noted that “engagement with COUSA reinforces our commitment to supporting the diaspora as vital partners in promoting sustainable national development.”
Ambassador Paul Amoru, Uganda’s High Commissioner in Pretoria, emphasized the importance of the diaspora in Uganda’s development, noting that “the commitment of the Ugandan diaspora is invaluable to our nation,” and that “their contributions, through remittances and investments, facilitate economic growth and development at home, reiterating that the convention serves not only as a networking opportunity but also as a strategic platform for addressing shared challenges and leveraging collective strengths.”
During the convention, participants will engage in collaborative discussions and exchange of knowledge, focusing on innovative practices that can drive mutual growth. During the Convention, the process commencing the identification of eminent Ugandan to benefit from the Diaspora High Achievers Awards, an initiative of the Uganda High Commission which will recognize outstanding contributions within the Ugandan community in Southern Africa.
Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in knowledge exchange sessions, celebrate achievements through the awards, and explore avenues for collective investment and involvement in local communities.
The Uganda High Commission in Pretoria has been actively mobilising the diaspora community as a vital force for our country’s development agenda. The strong bilateral relations between Uganda and the six Southern African under the jurisdiction of the High Commission, support trade and cultural exchanges that benefit both regions. Ambassador Amoru noted that ongoing collaboration and support from the Ugandan government reflect a broader strategy to strengthen ties and promote socio-economic development.
“We are enthused to welcome Ugandans from various sectors and backgrounds to this convention,” said Ambassador Amoru. “This is not just an event; it is a platform for our diaspora to come together, share experiences, and contribute to the holistic development of Uganda.” He thanked the leadership of COUSA for their resilience and commitment to unite Ugandans and promote trade and national development. The COUSA Board is led by Dr. Daniel Echun while the Executive is led by Mr. Moses Kibombo as President.
