Watu Simu, the smartphone financing arm of Watu, and Samsung, a global technology leader, have partnered to provide affordable smartphone financing to Ugandans.
The initiative combines Samsung’s world-class devices with Watu Simu’s flexible financing model, ensuring that no region of Uganda is left without access to technology.
This approach has proven successful in Kenya and other African countries, where millions of clients have gained access to smartphones for work, education, and connectivity.
In Uganda, the partnership has already benefited over 500,000 customers, with many more expected as the model expands nationwide.
A recent GeoPoll survey highlights the tangible impact of smartphone access in Uganda, with 54% of Watu customers reporting higher incomes, 21% securing new jobs, and 86% accessing mobile banking weekly.

For business owners like Zubedah Nabankema, a smartphone has transformed her juice business, enabling her to manage orders digitally, reach more customers, and increase her income.
Similarly, Suzanne Masimbwa, a food vendor, used a Watu Simu loan to buy her first smartphone, which has improved her business operations, expanded her customer base, and enhanced her financial security.
Moses Kutesta Buye, Country Manager for Uganda, Samsung Electronics East Africa, said, “Samsung is committed to driving digital inclusion across Africa. Through this partnership with Watu Simu, we are ensuring that more Ugandans can access innovative technology that enhances their daily lives and creates growth opportunities.”
Mykyta Batenko, Head of Watu Simu in Uganda, added, “At Watu, our mission is to unlock financial access and empower communities. Reaching over 500,000 clients in Uganda is just the beginning; we are committed to scaling further so that millions more, including those in underserved regions, can benefit from affordable smartphones and the opportunities they create.”
