Kenya President William Ruto has announced that Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai had applied to proceed on terminal leave for the remaining six months of his remaining contract.
“Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has proceeded on terminal leave,” said a statement issued by State House on Tuesday.
President William Ruto said health reasons had forced Mr Mutyambai to retire.
He later announced the nomination of Japheth Koome — the current Commandant of the National Police Service College in Kiganjo — as the new Inspector General, subject to vetting by the National Assembly.
The President was speaking when he unveiled the Cabinet at State House, Nairobi.
Dr Ruto said the head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti had also resigned.
“We ask the National Police Service to advertise the position,” he said.
