The Prime Minister of Uganda, Dr Ruhakana Rugunda has lauded the Namunkekera Rural Industrial Center (NRIC) in Kapeeka, Nakaseke district for boosting the production of locally manufactured ceramic tiles.
Dr Rugunda was Friday visiting the industrial center where he was conducted on a tour of the various industries operating there. He was received by the Chief Coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation (OWC), Gen Caleb Akandwanaho (Salim Saleh) together with other officials and manufacturers.
The Prime Minister commended the progress being made by NRIC particularly in furthering the agenda of industrialization.
In a note authored by the Prime Minister on one of the locally manufactured tiles, he stated; “I am happy to see the local manufacturer of good quality tiles in Uganda”.
“This should reduce imported floor tiles” Dr Rugunda added.
The ceramic tiles, the first to be manufactured in Uganda are produced by Goodwill (U) Ltd.
Commissioned earlier this year with an initial investment worth USD 30 million, the ceramics factory employs 1,016 Ugandan workers. The company started commercial production of ceramics this month with 92% of the materials sourced locally.
The factory will have two production lines capable of producing 40,000 square metres of ceramic tiles, 60% of which will serve the domestic market and 40% for export.
