Private sector players are being urged to seize healthcare investment opportunities in rural Uganda, addressing critical gaps in the nation’s healthcare system.
Speaking at the Uganda Pharma Healthcare Forum, Professor John Charles Okiria, Chairperson of the Allied Health Professionals Council in Uganda, emphasized the private sector’s pivotal role in delivering services to areas overlooked by the government.
“While there’s often a call for more government action, it’s evident globally that governments alone are not able to do enough. As responsible citizens, we must actively contribute to enhancing healthcare in rural settings,” Okiria stated.
Acknowledging the financial challenges of rural investments, Okiria highlighted the private sector’s potential to make meaningful contributions to rural healthcare quality.
“This attitude will drive us to go and support the communities that are disadvantaged by their locations, and their status in terms of income, So my call is to let the private sector not only concentrate in urban areas, but can we take the services to our people, because they are our parents, relatives, and our origins,” he urged.
Dr. Mugarura Rodney, President of the Orthopedic Society of Uganda, emphasized the urgent need for healthcare personnel in rural areas, emphasizing the necessity of collaborative efforts between the government, private sector, and non-governmental organizations.
“The growing population exacerbates the shortage of healthcare practitioners. It requires a concerted effort from both the public and private sectors, along with NGOs, to train more practitioners and provide essential equipment for effective healthcare delivery,” Mugarura explained.
Reflecting on the Pharma Healthcare Forum, Okiria highlighted the overwhelming interest from international investors, showcasing Uganda as an ideal destination for pharmaceutical and medical care investments.
“The forum has presented a compelling investment case, attracting numerous investors demonstrating their products and distribution plans. Uganda is receiving positive feedback as the preferred investment hub,” Okiria stated.
Mugarura expressed optimism about the future, noting the diverse range of products and technologies exhibited at the forum.
“With exhibitors from Europe, India, and local Ugandans presenting innovative products, the future looks promising for Uganda’s healthcare system,” Mugarura affirmed.
