President Museveni has described the late His Holiness Pope Francis as “an extraordinary spiritual leader and a deeply respected theologian whose unwavering commitment to the faith revitalised the Church’s mission in an increasingly secular world”.

Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church since 2013, passed away on Monday, April 21st, 2025, at the age of 88. His death, attributed to complications following a stroke, has prompted an outpouring of grief from Catholics and world leaders alike.

In a formal letter dated April 21st, 2025, addressed to the Vatican Secretary of State, His Eminence Pietro Parolin, President Museveni conveyed his nation’s sympathies.

“It is with profound sadness that I have received the news of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis,” President Museveni wrote. “On behalf of the Government and the people of the Republic of Uganda, and on my own behalf, I extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to you and, through you, to the entire Catholic Church worldwide”.

President Museveni lauded the late Pontiff’s contributions, stating, “His Holiness Pope Francis will be remembered as an extraordinary spiritual leader and a deeply respected theologian whose unwavering commitment to the faith revitalised the Church’s mission in an increasingly secular world”.

He further highlighted the Pope’s impact, noting, “His voice for peace, social justice, compassion, and humility touched the hearts of millions and inspired hope among the faithful”.

The Ugandan President also commended Pope Francis’s efforts in interfaith dialogue, referencing his “readiness and enthusiasm to deal with other faiths such as the Moslems, the Orthodox Christians, etc,” which, President Museveni wrote, showed he “was a religious leader that was truly in the Kisinde (track) of Jesus”.

Concluding his message, President Museveni affirmed, “His legacy of love, unity, and service to humanity will endure for generations to come. We stand in solidarity with Catholics in Uganda and around the globe during this time of mourning. May his soul rest in eternal peace”.

The Vatican has announced plans for Pope Francis’s funeral, expected to take place on Saturday. Cardinals will convene in the coming weeks to elect his successor.
