A total of 63 members of the East African Legislative Assembly have been sworn in for a new five-year term.
The oath of allegiance to the treaty for the establishment of the East African Community was administered by the Clerk of the Assembly, Alex Obatre, in Arusha, Tanzania on Monday.
Former Speakers of the Assembly including Margaret Zziwa and Dan Fred Kidega from Uganda were among officials from partner states including ministers, speakers of the senate and the national parliaments and former EALA speakers who attended the event.
Since its establishment in 2001, the assembly has had five speakers from Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda (2), Rwanda and Burundi (newly elected).
The Democratic Republic of Congo sent in nine members for the first time since the country joined the East African Community in March this year.
