The Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah, has honoured his US$10,000 annual contribution to the Rotary Club of Kampala Central.

Oulanyah, now a major donor, announced the contribution while presiding over the installation of the 29th President of the Rotary Club of Kampala Central, Flavia Mbabazi Nabaasa on Wednesday, 15 September 2021 at Parliament House.

“Madam President, you lead a great team where you have governors, past governors, past presidents – where everyone is a potential president. Use your skills to draw them close; use their skills so that you excel in your duties,” said Oulanyah.

He added, “I am very delighted with your choice of flagship programmes on your assumption as President. Teenage pregnancies are a matter of urgent concern in the country, which need focus especially with the current situation of COVID-19.”

Oulanyah reminisced about the visit to Parliament by the Rotary International President, Shekhar Mehta, on Tuesday, 14 September 2021 where he pinned him.

“I feel more energised than ever before to be able to give my contributions to the activities of Rotary and Rotary International.

I am always delighted to be on this and in my world, I have discovered when people are happy there is a lot achieved. When they are angry, not much is achieved. Rotary builds on the humour to make things work making things memorable and enjoyable,” he said.

The Speaker lauded Parliament’s Director for Finance, Patrick Kunobwa, for introducing him to the Rotary Club of Kampala Central and the Rotary fraternity in general.

Nabaasa, who took over from Sheila Naturinda, said she was ready to serve.

“I will be honest; I have always avoided this responsibility because I was busy due with my career goals. I do realise that service is a matter of the heart and has nothing to do with time but where there is a will, there is always a way,” she said.

The 29th President emphasised that her team, “the change makers”, would focus on teenage pregnancies. “We have also committed on 20 new members this year. We aim at raising over US$25,000 for our flagship projects,” she added.

Some of Nabaasa’s board members include five Parliament staff; President Elect, Julian Kaganzi (Chief Procurement Officer); Vice President, Lydia Bujara (Administrative Assistant, RAKIPS); Board Advisor, Charles Kizza (Director, Office of the Leader of Government Business); Director, Family of Rotary, Susan Katono (Director, Legislative and Procedural Services); Sergeant-At-Arms, Moses Matovu (Principal ICT officer) and Treasurer, Aaron Semakula (Senior Accountant).
