The 4th Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) at its 10th Meeting sitting held in Entebbe on July 8, 2022, resolved to retain the incumbent East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Members of Parliament.
A communication by the NRM Secretary General, Richard Todwong, noted that the Central Executive Committee having received 130 names of members who expressed interest for election to the position of Members of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) and having noted the withdrawal of 63 candidates, recommended that the incumbent EALA members be maintained, in recognition of their exceptional performance, to continue their tenure for another term.
He said CEC endorsed the incumbent EALA members to the NRM Parliamentary Caucus as NRM candidates for the position of Members of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
The current/ endorsed MPs include; Akol Rose Okullu, James Kakooza, Mary Mugyenyi, Paul Mwasa Musamali, Dennis Namara and Odongo George Stephen.
Article 50 (1) of the East African treaty states that the National Assembly of each partner State shall elect, not from among its members, nine members of the assembly, who shall represent as much as it is feasible, the various political parties represented in the national assembly, shades of opinion, gender and other special interest groups in that partner state.
Each term in EALA is five years and the law states that an MP can serve for only two terms.
