Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Deputy Spokesperson, Paul Mwiru has confirmed that the party shall not hold any primaries for choosing a flag bearer ahead of the Arua Municipality by-elections.
Arua Municipality seat fell vacant following the death of the area MP, Ibrahim Abiriga who was gunned down by unknown assailants last month on his way back home in Kirinyabigo – Kawanda, in Wakiso district.
According to the road map issued by Electoral Commission (EC), nomination of candidates will be held on July 19 and 20 at Arua District headquarters while as polling will take place on August 15.
Mwiru told the media during a weekly press briefing in Najjanankumbi that a number of FDC members have since expressed interest to compete for the party flag and represent the people of Arua.
However, according to Mwiru, these members will have no chance since the party shall not hold any primaries to that effect but will maintain their candidate who ran in the 2016 general elections as the party flag bearer.
“We have read with concern from the media about interest from various people who want to contest on FDC ticket. The party wishes to inform the public that the FDC ticket was given to Bruce Mudathir Musema,” noted the party Deputy Spokesperson, Paul Mwiru.
Mwiru said that Musema is well positioned to win the seat given his performance in the 2016 general elections where he garnered 7227 votes against the late Abiriga who got 8473 votes.
“I now confirm that Musema is the official FDC party flag bearer for Arua Municipality,” Mwiru said.
