KAMPALA — The Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) has officially inaugurated its new Executive Committee for the 2026–2028 term in a ceremony presided over by Prof. Sarah Ssali on behalf of Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe.

Outgoing Chairperson Dr Robert Kakuru, who handed over leadership, urged the new committee, led by incoming Chairperson Assoc. Prof. Jude Ssempebwa, to “Build Bridges, Structures and Strong networks” and continue the initiatives started by the 2024–2026 leadership.

Incoming leadership pledges continuity

Assoc. Prof. Ssempebwa commended Dr Kakuru and the outgoing committee for their achievements and thanked sister staff associations, including MASA and NUEI, and the Makerere University Guild for their support on various causes. He also acknowledged Prof. Nawangwe’s efforts in advocating for enhanced staff salaries.

“We are committed to building on the strong foundations laid by the previous leadership while strengthening networks across faculties and departments,” Ssempebwa said in his acceptance remarks.

MUASA Executive Committee 2026–2028

The new MUASA Executive Committee comprises:

  1. Chairperson – Assoc. Prof. Jude Ssempebwa
  2. Vice Chairperson – Dr Laban Musinguzi
  3. General Secretary – Dr Sylvia Baluka Angubua
  4. Treasurer – Dr Robert Fungo
  5. Deputy Secretary General – Dr Hawa Kasule
  6. Representative, CAES – Dr Patrick Musinguzi
  7. Representative, CoBAMS – Dr Bernard Odur
  8. Representative, CoCIS – Dr Asiimwe Paddy Junior
  9. Representative, CEES – Dr Stella Achen
  10. Representative, CEDAT – Dr Apollo Buregyeya
  11. Representative, CHS – Dr Lutoti Stephen
  12. Representative, CHUSS – Dr Nixon Wamamela
  13. Representative, CoNAS – Dr Moses Kasaka
  14. Representative, CoVAB – Dr Joelia Nasaka
  15. Representative, Law – Dr Daniel Ruhweza
  16. Representative, Library – Dr Kasusse Michael Luwombo

The university community congratulated the new leadership, emphasising the importance of collaboration, advocacy for staff welfare, and continued professional development.

The swearing-in marks the beginning of a two-year term during which the MUASA Executive Committee is expected to advance staff interests and strengthen institutional governance at Uganda’s oldest and largest public university.
