Ukrainian President Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelensky has held the first-ever conversation with Uganda’s President, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

“I was pleased to have the first conversation in the history of bilateral relations with President of Uganda @KagutaMuseveni,” he tweeted Wednesday.

Zelensky said in his chat with Museveni, he outlined the Ukrainian peace initiatives at the UN.

“We also discussed the potential for the development of bilateral relations,” he added.

Earlier, Zelensky congratulated the newly appointed head of the African Union and said that he expected close cooperation, in particular, in strengthening food security.

On Wednesday, the UN General Assembly Eleventh Emergency Special Session (ESS) resumed its work and will address the issue of comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine consistent with  Charter principles of sovereign equality and territorial integrity.

“We urge every responsible Member State to support resolution tomorrow (Thursday),” Zelensky noted.

Uganda has continued to state its neutrality regarding Ukraine- Russia war.

At the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in March 2022, Uganda abstained from voting during a resolution denouncing Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Uganda’s Special Envoy and Ambassador to the United Nations, Adonia Ayebare, said that abstaining from voting at the UN Assembly was for strategic reasons.

“As the incoming chair of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), neutrality is key. Uganda will continue to play a constructive role in the maintenance of peace and security both regionally and globally,” he said.
