The National Resistance Movement (NRM), Secretary General, Richard Todwong, has noted that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is still the party flag bearer and presidential candidate for the forthcoming 2026 general elections.
Todwong revealed that this was discussed, agreed and sealed in 2019 by the Central Executive Committee, which sat at Chobe Safari Lodge in Nwoya district.
He revealed that the 2019 CEC member’s resolution was final and that nothing has changed about it.
He remarked on Wednesday at the end of year thanksgiving held at the party headquarters in Kampala.
In the past weeks, some groups aligned with the ruling party endorsed President Museveni to run for the 2026 general election, which has stirred mixed reactions with some saying it’s not yet time for politicking.
According to him, this is not new. It has happened before and they can’t stop people from expressing their views.
“Those endorsing Museveni are not campaigning, they are just expressing wishes,”
”There is no new thing, the party is aware and at the right time, the party will present President Museveni as the party candidate. The young people who are moving around are only expressing their wishes that this should be actualized. It is not something new because CEC leaders resolved it at Chobe Safari lodge. The young people of the party thought it wise to show the public that Museveni is still popular,” he said.
