Museveni Mourns Victims of Kampala–Gulu Highway Crash

Kiryandongo — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic road accident that occurred on Wednesday morning along the Kampala–Gulu Highway at Kitaleeba Village in Kiryandongo District, which claimed multiple lives.

In a statement, the President said he had “learnt with sadness about the tragic accident that occurred this morning along the Kampala–Gulu Highway, claiming many lives.” He extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

“I have directed the State House Comptroller to give Shs 5 million to each bereaved family and Shs 1 million to the injured,” the President announced.

He also urged motorists and all road users to exercise utmost caution to prevent further loss of life on Uganda’s roads. “May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace,” President Museveni said.

Tragic

According to a press statement from the Uganda Police Force, the crash occurred at Kitaleeba Village along the Kampala–Gulu Highway, resulting in at least 46 fatalities. Authorities said some victims were initially mistaken for fatalities but were later found unconscious and rushed to the hospital.

“At the time of the crash, several victims were found unconscious, and some may have been mistakenly included in the initial fatality count. We are working in close coordination with health and emergency services to ensure accurate and timely updates as the situation develops,” said SP Kananura Michael, Chief Licensing Officer, Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety.

The Police, together with health and emergency services, continue to work closely to ensure accurate updates and provide assistance to the victims and their families.

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) led by the Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong expressed deep sorrow over the tragic road accident on the Kampala–Gulu Highway in Kiryandongo district, which tragically claimed 46 lives and left several Ugandans injured.

“On behalf of the NRM party and on my own behalf, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, relatives, and friends of all those who lost their lives in this devastating incident. We also convey our sympathies and prayers to those who sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment, and we wish them a speedy and full recovery,” said Todwong.
