President Yoweri Museveni has condemned political leaders in Kampala who incite others into demonstrations like strikes, urging for a civil and peaceful approach to resolving problems.
Museveni was Friday meeting with over 200 division councilors of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) who just concluded a one week leadership training course at the National leadership institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi.
The team consisted of leaders from different political affiliations some of whom had been threatened not to attend the training. The meeting with the President was held at State House in Entebbe.
“It is good that you defied the resolution and broke yourselves away from those people who did not want to help you. You have done well to go and be taught,” Museveni said.
Museveni was referring to an earlier decision taken by Kampala Mayor, Erias Lukwago to cancel the training which he claimed he had not been notified about.
A meeting convened by Lukwago on November 8 altered the proposal by Minister for Kampala Betty Kamya to organize the training for the councilors in Kyankwanzi.
“They are malicious, they want you to strike yet things like these can cause people to die,” the President told the leaders on Friday.
He wondered why those who incite them into violence don’t involve their children to demonstrate that it is a good cause.
In his message to the councilors, the President urged them to encourage the youth to engage in agriculture, industries, services and ICT in order to create wealth and employment for themselves.
“You leaders are like doctors, if you find a sick person, you advise them, encourage these youths to find what to do in these sectors because minus that you will have betrayed your people,” he told them.
He criticized politicians who take advantage of naive youths to mislead them into political fights like wearing red bands instead of helping them to earn income.
