Mityana municipality Member of Parliament, Francis Zaake has described the recent events in Zimbabwe as a Godly sign that the move by government to repeal the Presidential age limit is wrong. He said that God used the ousting of Zimbabwe’s long serving President Robert Mugabe to communicate to Uganda the importance of having safety nets against life presidency.
Zaake returned from a medical trip in the U.S on Friday after he was brutalized during the brawl that broke out in Parliament on September 27 when security operatives attacked the House.
The legislator was among the 24 opposition MPs who had been suspended by Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga for disrupting plenary proceedings during the tabling of the Age Limit Bill.
During a thanksgiving mass held in Mityana on Friday to welcome Zaake, he said; “God has already communicated to us his position regarding the debate in question but apparently our tormentors have not taken heed”.
He said that in the lead up to the dramatic power transition in Zimbabwe, the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs had planned to visit Zimbabwe to benchmark on its system regarding whether or not to repeal Presidential age limits.
Earlier in the day, his supporters and sympathizers, some dressed in red ribbons flocked Entebbe International Airport to receive him.
“I don’t think that that coup de grace in Zimbabwe happened by coincidence. In Ecclesiastes chapter 3:1, it is written that to every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven,” MP Zaake who was dressed in a red attire, typical of opposition politicians, told people who attended the mass.
“God has manifested his purpose to us as a country by letting a coup to happen in Zimbabwe a country we looked upon as the best for our benchmarking,” he added.
According to him, God deemed it necessary that the removal of Mugabe from power happened when Uganda was at political crossroads.
He said that Uganda’s fate nolonger lies in anybody else’s hands but God. Citing the Biblical story of Moses and Joshua, Zaake said that in spite of the efforts by the state to eliminate those with dissenting views, “God will erect a Joshua that shall deliver his people to the promised land where truth and justice will be the order of the day”.
“Let us now embrace all activities that aim to end the tyrannical regime with utmost faith in our God because for God is with us and if He is with us nobody can be against us,” he said.
Meanwhile, he promised to pursue legal means to find justice for assault and to seek an explanation as to why Parliament did not release the funds he was entitled to for his medical treatment.
