Mukono Municipality legislator Betty Nambooze Bakireke has hinted at stepping down as Member of Parliament should the president sign the passed presidential age limit bill into law.
Nambooze who was hosted by NBS television’s Simon Njala on Tuesday morning said that she has a mandate of only 5 years to serve her electorate as a lawmaker.
“If Museveni assents to this bill and declares that the term of office of current MPs has been extended by two years, I will retire in May 2021. People of Mukono sent me to Parliament for 5 years”.
“I feel cheated for Museveni to give me an extension of only two years yet the people of Mukono were to renew my term for other 5 years”, she added.
In December last year, Parliament overwhelmingly passed the removal of presidential age limits and extended its tenure for two extra years, a move described by many as greedy.
Presided over by the Speaker Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, who dismissed 6 legislators for indiscipline, 317 MPS voted for the extension, 97 opposed and 2 abstained amid strong opposition from religious leaders and civil organisations.
She’s a woman of intergrity, she will do it.
Let’s wait and see….Without her,….. Uganda will still develop ….
