Meet the Panellists at 5th Edition of Kampala Geopolitics Conference

Kampala Geopolitics Conference commences tomorrow, Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at Yusuf Lule Auditorium at Makerere University.

The conference is organised by Makerere University in partnership with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), UN Women, and the Embassy of France under the theme “Bringing International Debates to Africa”.

This year’s conference will host 15 panels with over 80 speakers discussing topics relating to global challenges, security, regional trends, sustainable development, sport, culture, and society among others.

Journalist Isabella Tugume will handle arrivals, introductions and opening remarks.

The opening panel on “Global Impact of the War in Ukraine – African Perspective,” from 10:30 am to 11:45 am will be moderated by Solomon Serwanjja, the Executive Director of the African Institute for Investigative Journalism.

The panellists include; Dr Samuel Kazibwe – Expert on International Relations, Antonio Querido – FAO Country Representative, Prof. Phillip Kasaija Apuuli – Political Science Department Makerere University and Manuel Lafont-Rapnouil, – Centre d’analyse, de prévision et de stratégie (CAPS) (TBC).

The panel on “Impact of Globalization on the Development of Sport and Cultural and Creative Industries” will be moderated by Joseph Kigozi – General Manager NBS Sport and Next Media Deputy Group CEO and Chief Strategy Officer.

The panellists are; Rasheeda Nalumoso, Arts Manager British Council Uganda, Peace Proscovia, Uganda Netball Captain, Morris Mugisha – Film Director, Andrew Ahuurra – Director of Quad A records, laureate of Creative Africa and Nicole Magabo, Invention Film.

“The future of East African Jihadism Revisited- the Cases of East Congo, Mozambique and Somalia” will be moderated by Ahmed Hadji – Adjunct Professor and Senior Fellow at Africa Institute for Strategy and Policy.

The speakers include; Dr Hans-Jakob Schindler – Senior Director of Counter Extremism Project (CEP), Abdishakur Hassan-Kayd – Senior Security Advisor, Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation, Republic of Somaliland, Liesl Louw-Vaudran – Senior Researcher at Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and Angelo Izama – Journalist.

“Health: Moving from Leadership to Partnership for a Sustainable Global Health Strategy” will be moderated by Walter Mwesigye – Health Editor at Nation Media Group.

Speakers include; Tlaleng Mofokeng – UN Special Rapporteur on Right to Health, South Africa, Hon. Ruth Aceng – Minister of Health Uganda, Yonas Tegegen Woldemariam – Country Representative WHO, Prof. Christian Happi – Centre director, African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious diseases and Dr Louis Kamulegeya – Projects and Research Manager, Rocket Health.

“Cybersecurity-Resilience of African States and Threat Scenario” will be moderated by Robert Kirunda – Founding partner at Kirunda & Wasike Advocates.

Speakers are; Dustin Dehez – Managing Director secori advisors, Famious Orishaba – Cyber Security Expert | Threat Intelligence Analyst, Moses Owinyi – Centre for Multilateral Affairs, Stephen Mugabe – Manager Data Protection Affairs, National Data Protection Office Uganda and Nanjira Sambuli – UN Panel on Digital Cooperation (TBC).

“Defending Rights in Times of Insecurity; Human Rights, Development and Security Policy” will be moderated by Ivan Okuda – Lawyer and Writer.

Speakers are; Ivan Rugambwa – Journalist and Social Commentator, Anthony Masake – Director of Chapter Four Uganda, Robert Ssempala – Director of Uganda Human Rights Network for Journalists and Hanna Schneider – Programme Manager, Munich Security Conference.

“Understanding Uganda’s Out-Migration Trends” will be moderated by Ojok Okello – Programme Manager, Konrad Adenauer Foundation’s Country Office Uganda & South Sudan.

Speakers include; Agnes Igoye – Migration Expert, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Prof. Jimmy Spire Ssentongo – Associate Dean, SPGSR, Uganda Martyrs University, Micheal Mutyaba – Immigration Consultant, Frank Nuwagaba – Immigration Officer, Ugandan Ministry of Internal Affairs and Barbara Maureen Kalumba – Programme Manager, Africa Institute for Investigative Journalism.

The opening panel on the second day will get underway at 9:30 am featuring Panellists like; H.E. Xavier Sticker, Nils Wörmer, Paulina Chiwangu, Patrice Gilles, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe and Isabella Tugume.

The panel on “The Role of the African Union in Conflict Resolution – To what extent can there be Pan-African interests?” will be moderated by Kwezi Tabaro, Deputy Director, LéO Africa Institute.

The panellists include; Hon. Betty Bigombe, Senior Director Fragility, Conflict & Violence at World Bank, Dr Gerrit Kurtz, German Institute for International and Security Affairs, Daniel Bwambale, Judicial Service Commission, Nkunda Dismas, Atrocities Watch Africa and  Dr Andrew E. Poku-Yaw Tchie, Norwegian Institute of International Affairs.

The conference will also feature cultural performances and an exhibition, plus training of journalists on how to report different topics.
