The President of the Uganda Medical Association (UMA), Dr Ekwaro Obuku has been attacked by thugs suspected to have been robbers, leaving him injured. Reports confirmed by Police say he was attacked by robbers on Wednesday night while he was driving into his residence in Kitikifumba, Kiira in Wakiso district.
Dr Obuku had stopped at his gate at around 11 pm waiting for the gate to be opened when five thugs pounced on his car and assaulted him before taking off with his valuables.
They threw huge stones at his windscreen and ordered him to get out.
He is currently hospitalized in Intensive Care Unit at Case Medical Centre in Kampala after sustaining head injury and bleeding profusely.
But friends who visited him on Thursday morning told SoftPower News that his state is not worrisome.
“Dr Ekwaro is fine . He has a bandage around his nose where the thug hit him. That’s all. No other injuries. And he’s in good spirits,” one of the friends told this website.
He said that Dr Obuku told him that the same thugs had also attacked another car before they got to him.
Dr Pauline Bywakika, the UMA Vice President says Dr Obuku is currently conscious, stable and improving steadily.
However, some friends told this website that they were turned away by a nurse at Case Medical Centre who demanded to know if they had appointment with Doctor Obuku.
“Imagine the nurse asked, are you on appointment? Really? How can I have an appointment with a patient?” one of Dr. Obuku’s friends told SoftPower.
“Does the nurse think that is Doctor Obuku’s office or that he is attending to patients?” he wondered.
Police have described the criminal offense as aggravated robbery and confirmed that there have been similar cases of robbery in the area.
Police also say another person, a relative to Dr Obuku identified as Joyce Akiigwa was also attacked and robbed while driving to the same residence moments before.
Akiigwa who is said to be Dr Obuku’s mother-in-law was robbed of her hand bag that contained money and some documents.
According to an account by a resident in the area, Akiigwa had driven to the resident to pick her daughter (sister to Dr Obuku’s wife) since it was late.
