M23 Renewed Fights: Rwanda Accuses DR Congo Army of Shelling its Territory

Kigali, 23 May 2022: The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) has requested the Expanded Joint Verification Mechanism (EJVM) to investigate cross-border shelling on Rwandan territory by the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC).

The Rwandan army said that on Monday, 23 May 2022, between 9am and 10am, FARDC rocket shelling hit Kinigi and Nyange Sectors in Musanze District which also borders Gahunga sector in Burera District.

Col Ronald Rwivanga, military spokesperson said: “The situation in the area is normal and security assured. Officials are assessing the extent of the damage.”

He added: “The RDF has requested for urgent investigation by the regional EJVM, and Rwandan authorities are also engaging DRC counterparts over the incident.”

However, DR Congo rejected Rwanda’s accusations saying Rwanda Defence Force backs M23.

It is not the first time Congolese authorities accuse Rwanda of backing M23.
