Members of Parliament have overwhelmingly elected West Budama Central MP, Jacob Maksons Oboth, as the Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament, securing a decisive landslide victory during the House’s inaugural sitting.

The election was presided over by Chief Justice Flavian Zeija, in line with constitutional procedure. Oboth-Oboth garnered an impressive 441 votes, comfortably defeating his competitors, Paul Mwiru of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who secured 60 votes, and Democratic Party (DP) President General Norbert Mao, who polled 15 votes.

Oboth-Oboth was nominated by Vice President Jessica Alupo, the Woman Representative for Katakwi District, and seconded by Kibaale County MP Frank Tumwebaze.  Katikamu South MP Hassan Kirumira nominated Paul Mwiru, while Tochi County MP Peter Okot nominated Norbert Mao.

In his acceptance remarks, Oboth-Oboth pledged to uphold the independence of Parliament, ensure orderly debate, and foster unity across the political divide as the House embarks on its 12th term.

Born on April 13, 1971, in Tororo District, Oboth-Oboth brings extensive legal and legislative experience to the role. He attended St Denis Ssebugwawo Secondary School for his O-Level education before proceeding to Tororo High School for A-Level.

He holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Makerere University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre, and a Master of Laws degree from the University of Minnesota Law School in the United States.

A seasoned legislator, Oboth-Oboth has represented West Budama Central County in Parliament since 2011. Beyond politics, he has contributed to academia as a part-time lecturer of law at the Islamic University in Uganda.

His election marks a significant transition in parliamentary leadership, setting the stage for the legislative agenda of the 12th Parliament.
