GLASGOW, Scotland — Para swimmer Husnah Kukundakwe delivered another landmark performance for Uganda after winning silver in the Women’s 100m Breaststroke SB8 final, while the She Cranes ended their campaign with victory and Uganda’s distance runners posted personal and season-best performances at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Kukundakwe finished second behind England’s Brock Whiston in the SB8 final, securing Uganda’s first medal in swimming at the Glasgow Games. Whiston claimed gold in a new Commonwealth Games record of 1:22.05, while Kukundakwe clocked 1:26.20 to hold off England’s Iona Winnifrith for silver.

The medal marked another historic milestone for the Ugandan para swimmer. According to Commonwealth Sport, it is Uganda’s first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in swimming, its first medal in para sport at the Games and the country’s first Commonwealth medal outside athletics or boxing.

Uganda also impressed on the athletics track in the women’s 5,000 metres final.

Esther Chebet narrowly missed out on the podium after producing a personal best time of 14:50.70 to finish fourth. Joy Cheptoyek crossed the line in 15:00.97, a season’s best that earned her 10th place, while Rebecca Chelangat also recorded a personal best of 15:07.20 to finish 12th.

In netball, the She Cranes concluded their Commonwealth Games campaign on a winning note with a convincing 65-56 victory over hosts Scotland to finish third in Pool B.

Uganda registered three victories from five matches, defeating Wales, Trinidad and Tobago, and Scotland. However, defeats to Jamaica and New Zealand meant the team fell short of a place in the semi-finals.

Despite missing out on the medal rounds, the She Cranes produced competitive performances against two of the world’s top-ranked sides before ending the tournament with a strong display against the hosts.

Reflecting on the campaign, the team’s coaching staff praised the players’ resilience and fighting spirit, saying the squad had laid a strong foundation to build on in future international competitions.

Uganda’s performances across swimming, athletics and netball capped another productive day for Team Uganda in Glasgow, with Kukundakwe’s silver medal providing one of the country’s standout moments of the Games.
