The strike resulted from the outcomes of the elections for student leaders which the students disputed. They allege that the school administration declared a Head Prefect whom the students had not duly elected.

The Police and UPDF responded quickly to calm the situation. As a result, 18 students, all male were arrested by Police and are being held at Kisoro Police station, according to the Police spokesperson for Kigezi region, Elly Matte.

He said there were no casualties.

“Last night, a few minutes past midnight, students of Standard High School rioted and damaged school property. Police was notified and it responded swiftly, and it was reinforced by UPDF,” Elly Matte said.

“When students were asked, they said the Administration rigged the elections and announced a different person from thr Head Prefect thet had elected,” he said.

He said the students should have used their leadership to engage the school authorities in order to reach an amicable solution other than taking the law in their own hands.
