Police in Kanungu district are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of an area LC1 Chairperson for Ruhija cell, Muramba parish in Kanungu district.

The local council leader identified as Mwesigwa Moses Kigongo, 32, was found dead Sunday in Ruhija cell, Muramba parish in Rutenga sub-county.

Police suspects that he was murdered by a one Twesigomwe Wilberforce, a resident of the same area.

It is alleged that Twesigomwe assaulted his wife badly which prompted the village Chairperson (the deceased) together with other residents to intervene in order to calm the situation down.

While Mwesigwa was arranging a hammock on which the assaulted woman would be carried to the health facility, Twesigomwe swang in with a hoe and hit Mwesigwa’s head with it, according to the Police spokesperson for Kigezi Region, Elly Matte.

Mwesigwa is said to have died instantly. Twesigomwe then fled the scene.

Matte says that as the suspect was fleeing, he met two other people including his sister, both of whom he cut. One of those that were cut is Akampurira Nelson. The two are nursing wounds.

An angry mob of residents chased after Twesigomwe and captured him at Omumbuga cell, Southern Ward in Kanungu town council and lynched him until he lost his consciousness.

He was rescued by Police which rushed in following mob action. The suspect was later taken to Kanungu Health Centre IV where he is currently admitted and is under the supervision of the Police.

Kigezi regional Police Spokesperson, Matte suspects that Twesigomwe could have been acting under the influence of drugs.

“You can imagine taking a life of someone, more so a Chairperson, who came to help the situation. It is very unfortunate. Inquiries were immediately initiated and the law will take its course,” Matte said.
