Kampala – The Kampala Flyover Construction and Road Upgrading Project (KFCRUP) has officially been handed over to the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) for operation and maintenance.
The February 19, 2025, handover ceremony was led by Ag. Chief Engineer Kitonsa Stephen from the Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT), marking the near completion of the USD 81 million project aimed at improving traffic flow within the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.

With a 99.75% completion rate, the flyover project includes: Clock Tower Flyover (584m overall, 366m bridge, 2 lanes), Shoprite Pedestrian Bridge (92m, three-pointed star shape), Clock Tower Pedestrian Bridge (229m, circular shape), Kibuli Pedestrian Bridge (40m), Nsambya Underpass (360m, 4 lanes) and Upgraded Roads (2,920m total).

Others include; Five Signalised Junctions at Shoprite, Clock Tower, Nsambya, Hospital, and New Kibuli Overpass, an Enhanced Drainage System with major culverts and side drains, Nine Gantries (18-48m wide) for traffic signage, Pedestrian Safety Features, including fences separating walkways from motorways and a Water Fountain near Pan African Square.

To support its operation and maintenance, KCCA has received a street sweeper truck, a drain pipe cleaner truck, two high-pressure washers, and two road patrol cars.

The Government of Japan, through JICA, financed the project, which was executed by Shimizu/Konoike Joint Venture with construction supervision by Nippon Koei, Japan Engineering Company, and ICS.

Allan Ssempebwa, Assistant Manager Media and Communications at MoWT, emphasised the flyover’s 100-year lifespan, noting that regular maintenance will be key to ensuring its long-term efficiency.

This project is expected to significantly decongest Kampala’s Central Business District (CBD), reduce traffic delays, and improve pedestrian safety, marking a major milestone in the city’s urban infrastructure development.
