Police in Kabale is investigating a case in which a man was killed by a mob for allegedly stealing Shs 4,000.
Samwiri Kwikiriza, 26, who was a teacher of Jerk and Jill in Kekubo cell, Kabale municipality in Kabale district was assaulted by a mob on allegation that he had stolen four thousand shillings and fridge keys belonging to a one Doreen Twikyirize, 24.
It is alleged that on December 12 at 5pm, Kwikiriza went to Twikyirize’s shop and when she realized that he had stolen the money and keys, Twikyirize made an alarm which attracted other residents who assaulted him badly.
The deceased was then rescued and rushed to Kabale referral hospital where he died three days later.
The Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, Elly Matte said that police is so far holding three people in detention who were part of the mob that assaulted the deceased in detention.
Those arrested include Doreen Twikyirize (shop owner), 28-year-old Mary Tumworobere and 25-year-old Francis Talizani, all residents of Kekubo cell.
Police is searching for the remaining suspects.
Elly Matte cautioned citizens against taking the law in their own hands.
“I want to caution our people. The law provides for how to handle suspected persons by reporting them to local authorities or arresting them and bringing them to police so they are charged accordingly,” he said.
He condemned the act of mob justice to the extent of taking one’s life.
