Munyonyo – The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abbas Byakagaba, has confirmed that this morning’s explosion near the Munyonyo Martyrs’ Shrine was caused by a motorcycle, but reassured the public that security forces are firmly in control of the situation.

Speaking to journalists at the scene, IGP Byakagaba described the incident as “ugly,” but stressed that there were no reported casualties among bystanders or pilgrims.

“There’s this ugly incident. There has been an explosion here,” Byakagaba said. “But the most important message to our people is that they should remain calm. The security forces are here and in control.”

The blast occurred just as pilgrims were arriving at the Munyonyo Catholic Shrine for the official start of the Martyrs Day festivities, which culminate on June 3. Security officers have since sealed off the area to preserve the scene for forensic investigation.

“So far, no bystanders or people nearby have been injured or killed apart from those who were on the motorcycle,” the IGP stated. “It’s too early to give anything tangible, but what I can say is that there has been an explosion involving a motorcycle.”

He urged the public to remain alert and vigilant, emphasising the importance of environmental awareness during large gatherings. “We ask our people to remain alive to the situation, to be conscious of their environment, and to account for whatever is within it.”

Byakagaba further assured the public that Martyrs Day activities at Munyonyo and Namugongo would continue as planned, with heightened security in place. “Let them continue with the celebrations. We assure them of our sincerity and commitment to their safety,” he added.

Thousands of faithful from Uganda and neighbouring countries are expected to participate in the Martyrs Day commemorations, which honour the 45 Christian converts executed for their faith between 1885 and 1887.
