GLASGOW — Ugandan para swimmer Husnah Kukundakwe has etched her name into the country’s sporting history after winning Uganda’s first medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, delivering a silver medal performance in the SB8 Women’s 100m Breaststroke.

The 19-year-old swimmer clocked 1:26.20 in the final to secure second place, becoming the first Ugandan athlete to reach the podium at the Glasgow Games and further cementing her reputation as one of the country’s most promising sporting talents.

The Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) celebrated the achievement, describing Kukundakwe’s performance as a landmark moment for Team Uganda.

“Husnah Kukundakwe has secured Uganda’s first medal of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with a brilliant performance in the SB8 Women’s 100m Breaststroke, finishing in 1:26.20,” the committee announced.

Kukundakwe had earlier qualified for the final after finishing among the leading swimmers in the heats, posting a time of 1:27.38 to book her place in the medal race.

Her journey to the podium marks another chapter in a remarkable career that has seen her break barriers for para swimming in Uganda. She has previously represented the country at major international competitions, including the Paralympic Games and World Para Swimming Championships.

The Glasgow medal is also a historic breakthrough for Ugandan swimming, as it represents the country’s first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in the sport and highlights the growing impact of para-athletes on Uganda’s international sporting success.

Kukundakwe’s achievement has been hailed as an inspiration for young athletes, particularly those living with disabilities, demonstrating the potential of inclusive sports development.

Her success comes as Uganda continues its campaign at the Commonwealth Games across several disciplines, with athletes in athletics, boxing, netball, swimming and other sports seeking to add to the country’s medal tally.

For Kukundakwe, the silver medal is not only a personal triumph but a defining moment in Uganda’s sporting history — announcing the arrival of a new generation of athletes determined to compete and win on the global stage.
