Hundreds of runners, conservationists, corporate teams, and families gathered at Kitante Primary School in Kampala on March 1, 2026, for the 8th edition of the Uganda Wildlife Half Marathon, reaffirming a growing national commitment to supporting the children of rangers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Held under the theme “Running to Educate Children of the Fallen Rangers,” the marathon blended fitness with purpose, as participants took on the 21km, 10km, and 5km fun run, all in a show of solidarity with families of fallen conservation heroes.

Organised by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, the annual event continues to serve as a vital fundraising platform for the Fallen Rangers Education Fund. The initiative currently supports nearly 150 children across primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions, ensuring they complete their education and transition into the job market.

Speaking at the event, Bashir Hangi, Assistant Commissioner for Communications at UWA and head of the Marathon Committee, expressed optimism about sustained public support. He noted that the marathon has steadily grown into a unifying cause that not only honours fallen rangers but also secures the future of their children through education.

The event was officially flagged off by the Minister for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Martin Mugarra Bahinduka, who applauded participants and partners for standing with conservation efforts and the families behind them.

Among the most powerful moments of the day were testimonies from beneficiaries of the fund. Allan Kelechi, who is set to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Multitech Business School, shared how the initiative transformed his life following the loss of his father.

“Since my father passed away, UWA has covered my school fees. I have completed my studies and am now awaiting graduation. I am hopeful that my siblings, who are also supported by the fund, will succeed one day as well,” he said.

Winners;

Mark Biryomumaisho won the Men’s 21km, Doreen Kipsang won the Women’s 21Km race, while Halima Nakayi won the 10km race.
