Elon Musk has been handed a new assignment with stakes far beyond the commercial technology industry: help the Pentagon determine which technologies will define warfare in the years and decades ahead.

U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth on Wednesday named Musk, Anduril founder Palmer Luckey and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to co-lead Project Meridian, a 120-day initiative designed to identify the military capabilities the United States will need to maintain a technological edge.

The project will be facilitated within the Department of War by Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael and will bring together private-sector technology leaders, academics, policy experts and military specialists.

Its remit is unusually broad. The Pentagon says Meridian will examine future battlefields ranging from underground environments to the cislunar frontier, while assessing technologies including artificial intelligence, autonomy, robotics, directed energy and biotechnology.

The objective is not simply to predict the next weapon. It is to determine which technological domains the U.S. must master, and how quickly it can turn advances emerging in the private sector into military capabilities.

Hegseth described the project as an effort to look beyond existing military thinking and identify the domains and capabilities the U.S. must lead in.

From rockets to robots

Musk brings an unusual technology portfolio to the exercise.

Through SpaceX, he has pushed reusable rockets and large-scale satellite communications into areas that have reshaped the economics and architecture of space technology. His companies are also developing autonomous systems and artificial-intelligence capabilities, while Tesla has spent years advancing electric vehicles, battery technology and vehicle autonomy.

Luckey brings a different but increasingly important piece of the technology stack. His Anduril Industries develops autonomous defense systems, drones, counter-drone technology and other military hardware, placing him directly at the intersection of commercial technology and modern warfare.

That convergence is central to Meridian.

The Pentagon is increasingly looking to Silicon Valley and defense startups for technologies that can be developed and deployed faster than traditional weapons programs. Project Meridian formalizes that approach by putting private-sector technologists at the center of a strategic exercise about the future battlefield.

A 120-day clock

The group has been given 120 days to produce its findings. The Pentagon says the process will culminate in an unclassified report for public release, accompanied by a classified annex.

The timetable reflects the speed at which the technologies under consideration are evolving.

AI models are advancing rapidly, autonomous drones are changing battlefield tactics, robotics are moving from controlled demonstrations toward operational use, and commercial satellite networks have become increasingly relevant to military communications.

The Pentagon has separately announced the creation of an Autonomous Warfare Command, underscoring the administration’s push to institutionalize autonomous and robotic systems across the US military.

Project Meridian takes the question one step further: What comes after today’s autonomous systems, and what should the U.S. be building now?

For Musk, the assignment represents another turn in a career built around tackling engineering problems at enormous scale. The Pentagon is now asking him and his co-leaders to apply that technology-driven approach to one of the most consequential problems in national security: anticipating the technologies that could determine how wars are fought before those technologies reach the battlefield.
