GLASGOW, Scotland — Uganda’s Denise Mbazira delivered a strong performance in para powerlifting at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, finishing second in Group B as the competition entered the medal stages.
Mbazira said she was proud of her performance after securing second place in her group.
“Today it has been my day and I have made it. I was in Group B and I secured 2nd position. The games are still going on but at the moment I’m 2nd in Group B,” she said.
Para powerlifting made history at Glasgow 2026 by becoming the first para sport to award medals at a Commonwealth Games.
Uganda’s participation in para powerlifting adds to the country’s growing representation across different sporting disciplines at the Games.
Weightlifter Davis Niyoyita Misses Medal Chance
Uganda’s Davis Niyoyita narrowly missed out on medal contention in the men’s 60kg weightlifting event at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Niyoyita, an African Games medallist, delivered determined performances in both the snatch and clean and jerk categories but was unable to complete his final 135kg lift.
The unsuccessful attempt ended his hopes of finishing among the top contenders at the Scottish Event Centre.
Despite missing out on a medal, Uganda’s participation in weightlifting continues to highlight the country’s growing presence in strength sports on the international stage.
