Police has said they are yet to conduct any arrest of people suspected to have been involved in the assassination attempt on General Katumba Wamala, the former Chief of Defence Forces and Minister of Ministry of Works and Transport.

Last week, gunmen travelling on two motorcycles opened fire at Gen Katumba Wamala’s UPDF Land cruiser along the Kisota –Kulambiro Road, Nakawa Division in Kampala District leading to the death of his daughter Brenda Nantongo and driver, Haruna Kayondo, leaving the general with injuries.

Police response has followed  reports circulating in different social media platforms  indicating that police as of Sunday had arrested several suspects and detained them in different police cells including Special Investigations Unit -SIU Kireka  and in Kira Road police division.

But speaking to Journalists at Police headquarters Naguru- Kampala, Fred Enanga the police spokesperson said the deployed joint security teams of investigators haven’t arrested any suspect, but they have recorded some people’s statements.

“We haven’t arrested any suspect, but we simply identified a few persons of interest to give us more information based on their knowledge about this incident, and we recorded their statement, and we don’t consider them as suspects, so the speculations should stop,” said Enanga.

He explains that the deployed teams have re-documented the scene, retrieved the CCTV camera footage, before and after the incident, carrying out sufficient forensic analysis on cartridges which have given hope to the investigations.

He says that the facts so far gathered will help to bring police closer to finding out the identity of the culprits and their hideout.

Although police has denied having suspects in custody, it is said that after the incident, Police went on arresting some people along the road near the crime scene including three students on Tuesday evening.

Over the weekend family in Bukoto claimed that security operatives arrested their son with his friend close in the vicinity as they were in preparation of going back to school and they are still detained at Kira-Road pending interrogations.

“On Tuesday June 2021, Police arrested my little cousin Charles Musobozi, a Senior Three students alongside with his close friends as part of the suspects connected to the assassination attempt of Gen. Katumba,” twitted a one Francis Obbo a relative of one of the young boys. URN
