GLASGOW, SCOTLAND — Uganda’s women’s 3×3 basketball team, the Gazelles, have secured a historic medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after defeating New Zealand 21-9 in the semifinals to book a place in the gold-medal match.
The dominant victory on Wednesday saw the Gazelles overcome one of the tournament’s strongest teams, earning Uganda its first-ever medal in the Commonwealth Games 3×3 basketball competition.
Uganda will now face Australia in the final as they chase a historic gold medal.
The Gazelles’ semifinal performance followed another impressive display in the quarterfinals, where they defeated Tonga 21-12 to advance to the final four.
Coached by Nick Natuhereza, the Ugandan team comprises Melissa Akullu, Jane Asinde, Jamila Nansikombi and Perus Nyamwenge, who have combined defensive discipline, attacking pressure and teamwork throughout the competition.
The decisive moment against New Zealand came through a composed team effort, with Jane Asinde’s free throw sealing Uganda’s place in the final.
“And with Jane Asinde’s free throw, we advance to the Commonwealth Games 3X3! What a team effort. Super proud of the ladies,” the Gazelles said after the victory.
The Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA) celebrated the achievement, describing the semifinal triumph as a major milestone for Ugandan basketball.
“After defeating New Zealand in the Commonwealth Games 3X3 Semi Finals, Gazelles advance to the finals! What a shift from the ladies,” FUBA said.
The victory also attracted praise from government officials, with State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang congratulating the team and urging them to complete the campaign with gold.
“Congratulations to the Gazelles 3×3 basketball team for advancing to the final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after a 21-9 dominant playoff win against New Zealand. Congratulations to our girls, let us bring the GOLD home,” Ogwang said.
The Gazelles’ run has provided one of Uganda’s biggest highlights at the Glasgow Games, adding to the country’s growing reputation in international basketball.
