Following their impressive performances in recent tournaments, Uganda’s Women’s National Basketball Team, the Gazelles, has received a special Women’s Day boost from PostBank Uganda and Crown Beverages Limited (CBL).
The sponsorship recognises the team’s dedication, resilience, and role in raising Uganda’s flag high on the regional and global basketball stage.
Building on their remarkable performances, the Gazelles secured a spot in the AfroBasket 2025 tournament after a hard-fought victory against Egypt. The tournament, set to take place from July 27 to August 3, 2025, in Ivory Coast, will feature Africa’s top basketball teams competing for continental supremacy.
As part of Women’s Day celebrations, PostBank Uganda has partnered with CBL to provide in-kind support for activations conducted through the office of the Women Commissioner, honouring the team for their commitment to the sport both on and off the court.
A Celebration of Excellence and Resilience
AfroBasket Women, formerly known as the FIBA Africa Championship for Women, is the premier women’s basketball championship on the continent, held every two years under FIBA, the global basketball governing body.
The competition serves as a qualifier for the FIBA Women’s World Cup and the Olympic Games, elevating Africa’s best teams to the international stage.
Priscilla Akora, Head of Marketing and Communications at PostBank Uganda, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to supporting excellence, resilience, and empowerment—values that the Gazelles have embodied throughout their journey to AfroBasket.

“As a bank dedicated to fostering prosperity for Ugandans, we believe our support will positively impact the team’s preparations. Youth and women empowerment is a key pillar of our Corporate Social Investment, and this initiative not only provides financial support but also recognizes, inspires, and uplifts women in sports. This aligns perfectly with the 2025 International Women’s Day theme, ‘Accelerate Action,’” Akora said.
Againe Sandra, Corporate Communications Manager at Crown Beverages Limited, highlighted the importance of hydration, especially given the ongoing heat wave with temperatures soaring up to 34 degrees Celsius.
“This partnership with PostBank is timely. Through our Nivana brand, CBL is donating 400 cartons of water to ensure the team remains hydrated and energized during training and competition,” she noted.
A Collective Effort to Empower Women in Sports
The Women’s Commissioner under the Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA), Mrs. Ainematsiko Racheal Atuhairwe, expressed gratitude to PostBank Uganda and Crown Beverages Limited for their contributions toward Women’s Day activations celebrating female athletes.
“This support comes at a crucial time as the Gazelles prepare for AfroBasket 2025. Partnering with organizations like PostBank and CBL helps us nurture and promote local talent, especially women’s sports, which often receive less attention.”
Gazelles’ Deputy Captain, Akello Hope Agnes, also appreciated the gesture, saying it will motivate the team to aim even higher as they prepare to represent Uganda on the continental stage.
“This recognition means a lot to us. It will inspire us to push even harder and fly Uganda’s flag high at AfroBasket 2025. We also look forward to supporting upcoming activations that celebrate not just our team but all young girls and women pursuing sports,” Akello said.
