GLASGOW, Scotland — Uganda’s women’s 3×3 basketball team, the Gazelles, continued their impressive start at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, recording four straight victories before suffering their first defeat against tournament favourites Australia.
The Ugandan quartet of Melissa Akullu, Jane Asinde, Jamila Nansikombi, and Perus Nyamwenge opened their campaign with a dominant display, defeating Jamaica, Cayman Islands, and Kenya on the opening day of competition.
After a closely contested opening match against Jamaica, the Gazelles found their rhythm and cruised past the Cayman Islands 21-7, with strong inside play and accurate shooting from beyond the arc.
They later completed a perfect first day by defeating regional rivals Kenya 21-5, marking their third consecutive victory.
The winning streak continued when Uganda defeated Fiji 21-8, extending their unbeaten run to four matches and strengthening their push for a place in the knockout stages.
However, their perfect record came to an end against Australia, who defeated Uganda 21-9.
The Ugandan team battled throughout the match but struggled against Australia’s physical advantage, particularly in the paint and on rebounds.
Despite the setback, the Gazelles remain in contention for a Commonwealth Games medal, entering the playoff stage as they continue their campaign in Glasgow.
The team’s strong performance marks another milestone for Ugandan basketball, which has continued to grow on the international stage.
