From Business to Music Promotion, Blockboy Finds His Place in Uganda’s Music Industry

Nyanzi Martin Luther, popularly known as Promoter Blockboy

KAMPALA — For Nyanzi Martin Luther, popularly known as Promoter Blockboy, business came first. Music followed. Now, at a young age, he is carving out a place for himself behind the scenes of Uganda’s music industry.

Born on December 5, 2009, Blockboy first made his name in business, serving as chief executive officer of Apex Media Services before stepping down in August 2026 to concentrate on his education.

His departure from the company was reported by New Vision, which also reported that Apex Media Services had rebranded as Block Media Services Ltd.

But stepping away from the company did not mean abandoning business. Instead, Blockboy had already begun building another career — music promotion.

He entered the field in 2025 after spending time studying how Uganda’s music industry operates and developing relationships with artists, producers and media practitioners.

His work largely happens away from the stage. He distributes music, pitches songs for radio airplay, markets releases and advises artists on how to position their work.

Unlike traditional music promoters, whose names are often associated with concerts and events, Blockboy works primarily on the recorded-music side of the industry: getting songs from artists to audiences.

Among his early contacts were Green Daddy and Fik Gaza. His relationship with Green Daddy eventually opened a door to veteran musician Dr Jose Chameleone.

Their relationship began online before developing into a working relationship.

In 2026, Blockboy contacted Chameleone about working with Chameleone FM on music distribution. Chameleone agreed and introduced him to his media manager, Gabbie.

For Blockboy, the relationship became a lesson in more than music.

He says Chameleone’s calm personality and willingness to welcome people have contributed to his longevity in Uganda’s music industry.

“What has made Chameleone to be leading Uganda’s music to date is being calm and welcoming everyone as you are,” Blockboy said.

He recalls being surprised by how the veteran musician received him when they eventually met physically.

“Chameleone welcomed me in a way I could never expect, even though we had never met. We used to do business remotely,” he said.

Blockboy has since worked with several artists, including Green Daddy, Da Agent, Gloria Bugie, Victor Ruz and King Zale.

Among the songs he has promoted or worked on are Da Agent’s Daddy, Victor Ruz’s Finally, Gloria Bugie’s Finally and King Zale’s Bebbo.

But he is careful not to present promotion as the source of an artist’s success.

Speaking about Daddy, which became a trending song, Blockboy attributed much of its impact to Da Agent himself.

“The energy for the artist made it a trending hit. Respect Da Agent,” he said.

That distinction defines how Blockboy sees his job. A promoter can create visibility, open doors and connect an artist to platforms; the artist still has to make music people want to hear.

And, in his view, attitude matters almost as much as talent.

“What makes musicians fail is being proud when you haven’t made it,” he said.

He recalls an artist from his village who released a song, attracted some attention and, according to Blockboy, became too proud to continue building the momentum.

His advice to musicians is therefore straightforward: keep working, promote the music and maintain relationships with people across the industry.

Blockboy’s interest in promotion has also brought formal recognition. In 2024, he received a Global Recognition Award for Music Promoter of the Year.

His experience in business and media has given him an understanding of two sides of the music industry: the commercial machinery behind an artist and the media platforms that determine how widely music travels.

Now, after stepping down from Apex Media Services to focus on education, he is continuing to develop his work in music promotion.

His story is still at an early stage. But perhaps that is precisely the point.

In an industry where artists occupy the spotlight, and promoters often remain invisible, Blockboy has chosen to build his career in the space between the two — connecting songs, artists, media and audiences.
