Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) deputy secretary for publicity Paul Mwiru has vowed to win the Jinja East bye elections slated for March 15.

He was speaking to journalists minutes after his nomination on Tuesday afternoon, at the Busoga square grounds in Jinja.

Today’s nominations follows a Court of Appeal ruling which ordered for fresh polls in Jinja East constituency in mid January. Court ruled that the earlier elections which had been won by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, Nathan Igeme Nabeta did not meet electoral standards and ordered him to pay costs Mr Mwiru had incurred in the High Court and Court of Appeal.

Mr Nabeta had appealed against Justice Lydia Mugambe’s ruling on July 18, 2016 when she ordered him out of Parliament on findings that he (Nabeeta) was fraudulently declared winner of the February 2016 elections by the then Jinja returning officer, Anthony Mwaita.

Court established that the results that had been announced in the 2016 elections from the polling station of Danina A-D were fraudulent.

“Victory is already ours and we are waiting to be sworn in. The voters already decided and their choice was denied by the electoral commission”, he said.

Similar to the comments made by Lord Mayor, Elias Lukwago in 2016 after winning the Kampala Mayoral seat, Mwiru also said that the political contest was ideally between him and President Yoweri Museveni.

“This is not an election between me and Nabeta, but one between me and President Museveni”, Mwiru added.

On Tuesday, four candidates were nominated out of the sixteen who picked nomination forms. These include Faisal Mayemba an independent candidate, Nathan Igeme Nabeta (NRM), Paul Mwiru (FDC) and Francis Wakabi (Independent).
