Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) is mourning the passing away of former Dr Kizza Besigye’s lawyer, Counsel Titus Kiyemba Mutale.
Counsel Mutale passed away over the weekend. He was a veteran human rights activist and lawyer.
“He fell victim to state brutality when he was assaulted by security agents in the High Court during the Second Court siege by the Black Mamba in March 2007,” FDC said in a statement.
After this court incident, he never recovered from the effects of the attack until he succumbed.
Counsel Mutale, alongside FDC Deputy President Counsel Yusuf Nsibambi, were the lead lawyers for the 22 People’s Redemption Army (PRA) suspects, including the Founding President Dr. Kizza Besigye and his brother Joseph Musasizi Kifefe who later died.
At the time of the court siege and that incident, they had secured bail for some of the 22 PRA suspects who were later rearrested by the Black Bambas outside court.
“His unwavering loyalty, commitment to the struggle, frankness, and humility were truly exceptional qualities,” FDC said.
“The FDC extends our deepest sympathies to the Kiyemba Mutale family during this painful loss and we pray for God’s protection and strength during this difficult period. May the soul of our departed soldier rest in peace.”
