Gulu — As excitement builds ahead of the Gulu City Marathon on 6th December, Equity Bank Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to community development, education, and health in Northern Uganda.
Robert Wanok, Head of Retail at Equity Bank, highlighted the bank’s long-standing involvement in Gulu. “The story of Gulu is a story of resilience, of heritage, and of Africa. We believe that when each partner picks up one piece of the work, we collectively build the bigger picture because it truly takes a community to raise a generation and to shape a future,” Wanok said.
He added that Equity Bank has previously supported education in the region. “Last year, in line with the objectives shared earlier, we awarded full university scholarships to the best-performing boy and girl. They are now pursuing higher education, and we are proud of their progress,” he noted.
The marathon, which brings together athletes and community members from across Uganda, provides a platform to promote health, unity, and social engagement, while celebrating the cultural heritage of Northern Uganda. Equity Bank is not only sponsoring the event but will also participate actively, encouraging employees and the wider community to join.

Preparations in Gulu are already in full swing. Members of the Rwenzori Team participated in a 5km warm-up run, generating high energy and excitement in the city. Meanwhile, Team Nakasero, led by prominent community figures, has also arrived, ready to take part in the marathon.
In addition to the race, a medical camp has been set up with support from Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, St. Mary’s Dental Clinic, and the Gulu City Health Department. Services include eye care, dental check-ups, and medical support for participants to ensure everyone is marathon-ready.
“Equity Bank is proud to sponsor the marathon. It is a perfect way for us to stand with communities, transform lives and livelihoods, promote health and community engagement, and celebrate the people of Northern Uganda,” Wanok said.
With multiple partners and organisations coming together, the Gulu City Marathon promises to be a celebration of local pride, social impact, and wellbeing, reaffirming the city’s position as a hub of resilience and community spirit.
