The Ministry of Education and Sports has officially assumed the responsibilities of the Higher Education Students Financing Board (HESFB) in a move aimed at enhancing efficiency and streamlining operations within Uganda’s education sector.

The handover ceremony was presided over by the Permanent Secretary, who was represented by the under-secretary, Dr. Jane Egau Okou. The Ministry will now manage HESFB functions through the Secretariat for the Higher Education Students Financing Board, ensuring continuity and effective service delivery.

Established under the Act of Parliament No. 2 of 2014, HESFB has played a vital role in supporting Ugandans to access higher education by providing financial assistance to students in need. This transition marks a new chapter in the government’s efforts to advance Uganda’s education sector.

Dr. Egau Okou emphasised the importance of maintaining the Board’s mission while leveraging the Ministry’s resources to improve operations.

“This integration aims to build on the achievements of HESFB, streamline processes, and ensure even more effective service delivery to Ugandan students,” she stated.

Over the years, HESFB has supported thousands of students in pursuing higher education, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. By centralising its functions under the Ministry, the government seeks to enhance coordination and accountability while continuing to prioritise access to education.

The transition underscores the government’s commitment to improving the education sector, ensuring that financial aid remains accessible to students and that Uganda’s vision for an educated and skilled population is realised.

Students and stakeholders have been assured that all existing programmes under HESFB will continue without interruption, with plans to expand and improve support mechanisms in the future.
