Mukono — The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) officially swore in 284 Enumerators and 272 District Supervisors at Colline Hotel in Mukono, marking a major milestone in the rollout of Uganda’s first-ever Aquaculture Census 2025.
The event, which occurred on Day 4 of the intensive national training program, was presided over by UBOS Executive Director, Dr Chris N. Mukiza, who hailed the initiative as a regional first.
“This is the first of its kind,” Dr Mukiza declared. “Let the rest of the region benchmark from our quality statistical products.”

Calling it a national assignment of utmost importance, Dr Mukiza urged the sworn-in teams to maintain the highest standards of integrity and professionalism in their work. “Your duty is to observe, record truthfully, and resist any temptation to fabricate data. Once you do so, you will be doing a disservice to the nation,” he cautioned.
He emphasised that accuracy, honesty, time management, and professionalism will define the success of the census, adding that discipline is non-negotiable.
“Each item is tracked and vital to your work. Handle equipment responsibly — it’s your toolkit for national service,” he said, referring to the data collection devices issued to field staff.

In a stirring conclusion, Dr Mukiza reminded trainees of the lasting impact of their work: “Do your work well, and we shall remember you. Listen. Observe. Measure. And never, ever accept a bribe.”
Ms Aliziki Lubega, UBOS Director for Economic Statistics, offered insight into the practical structure of the training. “Trainees were divided into 9 classes for in-depth learning. The next stage will be field practice,” she said.
The Aquaculture Census aims to provide accurate data on Uganda’s fish farming industry, which is vital to the country’s growing blue economy.

Meanwhile, on May 5, 2025, UBOS also launched a regional publicity campaign to raise awareness about the census and other ongoing statistical programs. The Bureau is urging all stakeholders to support the initiative by providing complete and accurate information.
“With this census, we are building a stronger data foundation for Uganda’s aquaculture sector,” UBOS stated.
