Kampala – Veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye was rushed to The Clinic at Bugolobi Village Mall in critical condition.
This follows a prolonged hunger strike in Luzira prison, demanding his release.
Amid heavy security deployment, Buhweju County MP Francis Mwijukye confirmed that Besigye arrived at the clinic on the third floor of the mall, transported in a wheelchair.
Concerned family members, political allies, and human rights activists have since voiced alarm over his deteriorating health.
Family and Political Allies Raise Alarm
Edith Byanyima, speaking on behalf of the Byanyima family, expressed deep concern, revealing that Besigye’s personal doctor had been repeatedly denied access to him while in detention.

“We received an unexpected request to bring Dr. Kizza Besigye’s personal doctor to visit him in detention – this coming after authorities had repeatedly denied him access is worrying. We are forced to speak out now because we believe the worst may be imminent,” she said, flanked by Olivia Byanyima.
Doctors Demand His Immediate Release
The Uganda Medical Association (UMA) has called for Besigye’s release, with its president, Dr. Herbert Luswata, stressing the ethical obligation to protect a fellow medical professional’s life.
“As an association of professionals who swore to nurture and protect life, it is our responsibility to speak out in defense of our colleague’s health. Remaining silent while a fellow medical professional’s condition is questioned would be a betrayal of the very oath we took,” Dr. Luswata stated.
Religious Leaders Join Calls for Mercy
The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, speaking during the 48th Commemoration of Janani Luwum Day in Kitgum, urged for forgiveness and compassion towards Besigye.
He also prayed for his quick recovery, emphasizing the need for unity and dialogue.
Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate and a fierce critic of President Yoweri Museveni’s government, has been repeatedly arrested over his activism.
